Off-Broadway

Off-Broadway
Conjunto de producciones teatrales de pequeña escala que se presentan en Nueva York.

En un principio el término fue utilizado para referirse a las obras experimentales de bajo presupuesto que se presentaban en teatros pequeños, como una alternativa a los espectáculos de carácter comercial de las salas de Broadway. A partir de 1952 los teatros Off-Broadway progresaron en cuanto a calidad e importancia, con las exitosas producciones dirigidas por José Quintero. Diversas obras de Edward Albee, Sam Shepard y Lanford Wilson fueron estrenadas en este circuito alternativo, como también piezas vanguardistas de Eugène Ionesco, Samuel Beckett y Harold Pinter. Hoy en día, numerosas creaciones teatrales debutan en bien equipados teatros, y el mundo teatral Off-Broadway cuenta con sus propios premios, los Obies. A medida que aumentaban los costos de producción, comenzaron a aparecer teatros más pequeños con nuevas propuestas escénicas que prontamente fueron denominados Off-Off-Broadway.
